New York Bar Exams - The UBE, MPT, and Multistate Essay Test

Applicants to the bar in New York are required to pass the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) to receive certification to practice in the state. The UBE is a standardized, multi-state test administered at least twice a year. There are also two other tests that are part of the UBE, the Multistate Performance Test and the Multistate Essay Test. A successful candidate is certified for admission to one of four Appellate Divisions of the New York Supreme Court. The UBE is a six-hour, 200-question multiple-choice exam. A two-hour, multiple-choice test is administered on a separate day. In some jurisdictions, the UBE is administered on the same date as the MBE. In other jurisdictions, it is administered on a different day. Applicants who pass the UBE will receive a score that can be used to take the MBE in any other jurisdiction that uses the UBE.
